journal3 - mom vs steroids

MOM VS STEROIDS
REFLECTION
This was an inspiring story which had told me about a regular mother, Lori Lewis who had never doubt on his son's trustworthy and honesty, who had eventually found out her son using steroid, as her son, Bryan was a football player. How I wonder a mother would feel to found that news out of her beloved trustful son.If I was about to face the same situation, I would be perfectly mad , disappointed, and might be lost control of myself. After all, it's not just her son who involved , but she found out that majority of the team had consumed this 'poison' too! But what Lori Lewis did was totally noble. She didn't try to hide things out to safe her son. She act to report the stand to the principle. However, the feedback that she received was a big disappointment from an ignorant irresponsible authorized leader. What I adore much was her spirit and sincere soul of a savior, as she concern that steroid was not only illegal but also hazardous for health. Her second step was to proclaimed the steroid case to the mass media, particularly to the newspapers. She dare to risk her own son's pride , the school, the team. The whole world was against her and blame her for what she had done. Her son Bryan was sad, giving up his life in the school and moved to a private school. Only a couple had stood up upon her back. Could you actually imagine how brave she is? I think this wonderful mother is a warrior upon herself. She believe in what she did, to stop those young sports player from using steroid, not being selfish to save her own son alone. Her action revealed the involvement of many other high schools in consuming steroids in sport. We aware that international sports players also do consumed steroids, as many cases appears in mass media and etc, but still, do you want it to continue, especially when it comes to your very own beloved teenagers? Lori Lewis has made me think about the purity of the school system right now. But still, it's not fair to blame disapproval fact. However, her story had built awareness in me to be more concern and a sharp mother in future. Who knows what would happened in future. Might be worst ! Therefore, all mothers should do what Lori Lewis had done, to vanish the negative stimuli to the youngsters.

SUMMARY

This article is about Lori Lewis who had eventually found out that her son, Bryan had involved in consuming steroid. The inspiring story which will definitely be beneficial for mothers around the world. This article shows her effort to reveal the case despite her own son's involvement or the school which he studied. The article also shows how the principle being irresponsible towards this case. However, the end of this article, where Bryan at last admitted that his mom was doing the right thing will actually persuade you to do the same!

In class assignment-critical reading

IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT-CRITICAL READING

What I've learn so far in the reading class a few topics;Tone, purpose, bias, figurative language, connotative language, fact or opinion, inferring main idea and pattern of organization.

For me the most difficult skill are; inferring main idea, tone and purpose because it is confusing. But what I did to overcome my confusion is by doing revision and go through the exercises.I also did some discussion with friends about it.

I think all the skills that I have learned from reading class are essential and related to each other. Therefore there's no priority of which one is the most important. All skills are probably applied because I can see, from the skills, they will help me understand any reading materials critically. It's fun to know the right method to read and It'll make it easier for me to under stand and gin more knowledge without being bored and fatigue. the information that I acquire from also will be more clear and understandable.

What I understand about critical reading is reading with full concentration to understand the gist of the writing and analyse the information with accurate methods. Without the methods learnt in my reading class, the reading will be just for the sake of having fun.

I believe critical reading will be very beneficial in my future study because what I've learnt from my seniors, the subjects in degree programme will required the students to memorize lengthy complex information. I believe that with the help of my knowledge in critical reading, I'll be able to understand and memorize much faster and have fun while learning. I'll get to know my objective of reading, understand the purpose of the writer , and summarize my lesson to enhance my understanding about the subject.

By reading the articles of my journal, I applied all skills. Mostly is tone and purpose. Not to forget ,inferring main ideas because these two elements help me to analyse the contents.Fact or opinion is also important in order to understand the journals.

In class assignment-blogging

IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT-REFLECTING-BLOGGING

I have never used or owned a blog before and I admit that I'm quite weak in IT (Information technology). Thanks to Mr.Izaham, our lecturer for TSL012 for giving me the cognition to the world of technology. It might looks simple to others but for me it's a very fundamental knowledge that I acquire.First of all I found that my first cognition to blog had build my interest towards IT. Instead of having a blog for TSL012, I create a blog of my own, a private blog to share my feelings and opinion with others. I was motivated to enhance the contents of my blog and I enjoy learning new things about blogs and the initials.

Secondly, with blog, all the assignments could be done in handy.I can save much time, energy and cost for every submission of my assignment.I can do my assignment maybe in college or at home at just post it.Easy right! Instead, I can also receive comments online from Mr.Izaham and my friends which are truly beneficial for me to improve my writing .In normal situation maybe we have to spend more time waiting for lecturers or friends on their free time to give constructive advice for us. With blog, The knowledge can be obtained anytime and anywhere we need it.

In my opinion, it is highly recommended for all lecturers to use blog as a medium to communicate and discuss with students. as I said earlier, first, the lecturer can post their notes and any information required easily to cover the situation where there might be students who had missed the information given during the lecture. the lecturer can also give assignment without having much hassle to gather the students and waste their energy and time.Secondly, an online discussion could be done where the lecturers can receive comments, problems and suggestion from the students and the students themselves can discuss each other. For English teachers and lecturers ,I think it's good if they could have a specific blog where they can post journals for the students to read, questions and exercises and etc.It is very important in language learning to en culture the usage of the language.
Features of the blog that I found most helpful is the comments features. It's fun to received comments from lecturers and friends without having myself to go to them because I'm a bit shy and passive. it helps me to improve a lot and i can actually discuss with them about everything related to the subject.I haven't found any part of features which was troublesome.
Compare to the classroom session, I found that it's fun to learn from blog. I can chat and do my work at the same time. I can also listen to the songs and receive lots of academic visual instead of listening to the lecture alone. I found myself intersted more on visual teaching aids rather than listening to the lecture. Therefore , by having a blog, it may enhance my interest and keep me focus to the subject.
i will continue to use blog after this.

Purpose and tone

WHEN THE FAMILY REUNION IS VIA REMOTE

Red-clue words

-South Korean Kim Yong-hun, 71, left, and a family member wipe their tears as they talk to their North Korean relatives through a screen during a video family reunion session at the video conferencing room of Red Cross in Daejeon, south of Seoul, South Korea, Tuesday, March ,27

Purpose: To describe the sorrow mood.
Tone: Sad
Reason: the writer describe how the family members wipetheir tears, showing the feeling of sadness or sentimental moment.

-The gray, bare-walled room, the size of a prison cell, is more funereal than celebratory considering three people in it were there for a family reunion. Byun Kiljae, 53, runs his hands up and down his face as if he were trying to remove grime from his already clean skin. He's flanked by two relatives — his wife and younger brother, who has just rested a large black wooden framed photo of their late father on an empty chair. All three family members gaze at a 60-inch flat screen four feet in front of them. In a few minutes, the brothers will meet their half-sister and nephew for the first time ever — or more accurately, lay eyes on and speak to their kin in North Korea for the first time, via a fiber optic video cable, installed as part of a video family reunion program between the two Koreas this week.

Purpose: To inform and describe the moment and its surrounding.
Tone:Relax yet formal.
Reason: The words in red is the clues of informative and descriptive phrase. The writer describe the room, people in the room, things that they were doing or holding in hands. The writer also describe the emotion and anxiety of the family members while they were waiting.

-Byun rises from his seat when the video feed begins and when his half sister and nephew suddenly appear on the screen. He introduces his side of the family, who take deep bows, then reaches to his left for the photo of his recently departed 88-year-old father.

Purpose: To describe
Tone:Somber but still relax and formal.
Reason: The writer had used descriptive words to describe the situation (words in red). But he had instill the somber mood from the beginning of the article and continuously effective in this paragraph too. I can feel the nervous, anxiety, and sadness.

-"Our father died only ten days ago," he says, holding up the frame in front a camera perched on top of the screen. "When he learned he was finally going to meet you, his heart and mind couldn't handle the excitement."

Purpose: To inform
Tone: Sad and mournful.
Reason: The writer inform by using the dialogue telling readers that the father died ten days ago after he had learnt that he was finally going to meet the other family members. The tone is sad because Byun was telling that his father had past away and he regret that his father didn't get the chance to meet the other family members.

-Fighting back tears, his half sister dabs her eyes with a white handkerchief while her nephew's eyes redden after hearing the heart-rending news.

Purpose:To describe
Tone:sad and full of sorrow
Reason:All the words in red shows how the writer actually describe the sadness of the family members. The writer also describe the news as heart-rending.

-For the next two hours, the Byun clan hold up photos to each other, chat about the family tree and promise to work toward unification so they can meet again.

Purpose: To describe and inform.
Tone:Relax, formal and with sense of hope for good things in future.
Reason:There's a bit description when Byun clan hold up photos to each other. Than the author just inform how Byun promise to work towards unification so they'll meet again.

-"It will take at least ten years for everyone to see their relatives at this rate," predicts Young Woon Choi, head of the Inter-Korean Cooperation Team

Purpose: to inform and persuade.
Tone: Informative blend with persuasive.
Reason: They'll never no the accurate time for them to gather again. The dialogue sounds more as an opinion and stand.so it could be informative but more to persuasive.

-Other family encounters don't go off without a hitch. "Why did you leave my mother in the North when you went to the South?" a young North Korean man asks his obviously frail 93-year-old South Korean grandmother.

Purpose: To inform points that may lead readers to be curious about cause and effects.
Tone:Curious
Reason:Because the question itself shows curiosity.
